SCRAP PRICES

rottame_lattineOne of the most common questions we are asked is: "how much is my scrap brass (or copper or aluminium, or steel, etc..)?

The answer, unfortunately, is not unique. In fact, the price of scrap depends on many factors that change over time.

First, the price depends on the type of metal and on the day. Some scrap metal are related to the performance of the London Metal Exchange (LME), and metal prices constantly change their value, minute by minute. The correlation between the LME and the scrap is very strong, for example, for copper and very weak, for example, for lead, this correlation depends on the quality of the scrap (usually closer to the wreckage of high quality and lowest for those of low quality). Finally, many scrap metal do not have a fee listed on the stock exchange (for example, silicon, or magnesium, or all of the rare metals) and thus their price basis only is known by traders who deal with that kind of scrap.

Another factor that influences the price is the amount of scrap. The price will be greater if the amount is large, less if the quantity is low.

Other factors that influence the price of scrap is the spot or forward delivery and the location where the price is defined. It may seem strange, but in some countries the correlation with the LME is stronger, in others not. Each country has different tolerances on the impurities contained in scrap and this of course also significant influence on the price.

But the most important factor in determining the price of scrap is definitely the strength of demand and the power supply. As in all markets OTC (Over The Counter) the price is determined by negotiation for negotiation when the buyer is satisfied with the price of the seller and vice versa. It is a non-transparent and inefficient market, where the price difference between a tarry and another can be significant.

In conclusion, since the formulation of the price of scrap remains a great mystery to the experts, do not worry, you can always ask: "what is the price of my scrap brass (or copper or aluminum, or steel, etc..)? "
