platinumPure platinum is similar to the silver. It is ductile, malleable and corrosion resistant. Possesses remarkable catalytic capabilities (a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen gas explodes in the presence of platinum) and is as strong as the gold corrosion and tarnishing. It is the third element in density after osmium and iridium.

Platinum has many uses. His features wear-and tarnish-resistance are well-suited for making fine jewelry. Platinum and its alloys are used in surgical tools, tools in the laboratory, the electrical resistance wires, and electrical contact points. It is used in the aerospace, chemical, electrical and glass (fiber optics and liquid crystal displays). It is also used as a catalyst in catalytic converters, but the increased use of platinum for jewelry.

Almost all of the world production of platinum is in Russia and South Africa. As metal is widely used in industry and its price is closely linked to the consumption and production costs, not influenced by investment and speculative component (as opposed to gold and silver).
