Cobalt is not pure metal, but only as a mineral and is mined as a byproduct of the extraction of copper or nickel. Cobalt was known since ancient times for its compounds, used to color glass blue. The annual world production is about 57,500 tons, of which 40% produced in the Congo and 31% in China.
