THE SILVER MARKET
Tuesday, 12 July 2011 18:45

silverdollarsThe silver is treated 24 hours a day on international markets in London, Zurich, New York, Chicago and Hong Kong. The market in London, founded in 17 th century, allows operators to buy physical silver on a spot basis, or fixed-term contracts for hedging.

It has a fixing for the official price of around 12.15 pm with mechanisms similar to the gold market.

London remains the global benchmark for all transactions for the sale of physical silver, while the futures and where they do not require physical delivery of the metal target market is the COMEX (Division of the New York Mercantile Exchange).

To invest in silver there are several options, each of which has characteristics that can be pleasing or not depending on the investment objective.

PHYSICAL SILVER

barIngots (silver bars) - are minted in various sizes ranging from 5 grams to 1000 troy ounces. The most common format is the ingot of 100 troy ounces. They are the preferred format for holding the metal in the long term. The ingots of 1000 troy ounces have the advantage of being able to be stored by stacking one on top.

coinCoins (silver coins) - are the easiest way to invest in silver. They are produced by government mints around the world and almost as well as legal tender, offer guarantees of weight and purity. Coins are the very popular Silver American Eagle and Silver Maple Leaf (Canadian).

roundDiscs (silver rounds) - discs of silver coins are produced by private mints. They have lower prices than the coins are legal tender and of course not.

bagsBags of coins (90% silver bags) - are bags containing pieces of silver (90%) minted by the United States before 1964.They have the advantage of being divided into smaller units and therefore ideal for barter.

NON-PHYSICAL SILVER

Mining stocks - You can leverage the rise of the silver (as well as undergo any rebates), buying shares in mining companies. The mining companies extract other metals such as copper, zinc.nickel and tin. So by buying these shares are also investing on the performance of other industrial metals. The parameters to consider carefully are those related to the company on which you choose to invest (financial statements, financial and economic indicators). A choice to distribute the risk across multiple sopcietĂ  is to buy mutual funds specializing in mining companies.

Futures - The futures market (and options) is another way to invest in silver. The main market for derivatives on silver is the COMEX (Commodity Exchange).
