INTRODUCTION TO THE LONDON METAL EXCHANGE

lmefloorThe London Metal Exchange (LME) is the largest non-ferrous metals and most important worldwide. It was founded in 1877 but its origins seem to date back even to 1571 (Royal Exchange). The first metal to be quoted was the copper, the last steel (2008). The value traded in a year amounts to about 11000 billion (2010).

It is based in London, at number 56 Leadenhall Street.

At the London Metal Exchange, you can sell or buy a wide range of futures and options, with underlying non-ferrous metals (copper, aluminium, aluminium alloys, zinc, nickel, lead, tin), minor metals and steel. All contracts are scheduled for delivery of physical metal. The currency exchange is provided for euros, dollars, yen and sterling, but dollar is the official currency (and the most widely used.

Besides being a financial market where buying and selling contracts, is the market where the prices of metals are fixed. In fact, negotiations are conducted in a ring, where 12 players allowed, twice a day, buy and sell on behalf of its clients and their own. At the end of the two sessions are recorded the official prices of metals. The twelve'ring dealers, admitted to the negotiations are the following:

In fact, the prices set at the LME are used by traders around the world as a reference for the metals listed herein, but also for all forms of metal derivatives (eg for scrap or semi).
