As reported TheGreenCar Website, the growth in production of electric cars in the short term could be adversely affected by the disconnection. This is the verdict of a new report by the Department of Energy (USA) entitled "Strategy for the 2011 critical materials." The paper examines five metals belonging to group rare earths: dysprosium, neodymium, europium, terbium and yttrium. These metals are used in magnets for wind turbines and electric vehicles, or in phosphorous for energy efficient lighting systems.

According to the report, the demand for these types of materials has grown more rapidly than other metals such as steel. This is because of increasing consumption of mobile phones, computers, flat screen televisions and clean energy technologies.

The report concluded that the producers of wind energy and electric vehicles are studying startegie alternatives to overcome the potential lack of these rare metals.

For example, manufacturers of wind turbines are studying systems with a lower use of rare earths, while the electric vehicle manufacturers are investigating induction motors without rare earths.
