High Grade primary aluminium is quoted on London Metal Exchange (LME). Its contract specifies a minimun 99.7% purity, with maximum permissible iron content of 0.20% and maximum permissible silicon content of 0.10%.

From January 2010, warrants for LME, P1020A are the unique valid specifications.

Primary aluminium is in form of ingots, (weight from 12 kg to 26 kg), t-bars or sows. Lot size (warrant) is 25 ton.

On the market you can find different qualities of primary aluminium and different names, linked to different standard, but they are close or equal to LME specifications: 1080A, 99.8, 1070A, 99.7, A7, A7E, 1050A, 99.5, 1200, 99.0. There are different brands, forms and different lot size. Sometimes, in commercial transactions, it is named pure aluminium when the minimum content of aluminium is 99.0%.

Primary aluminium is always accomplished with chemical analysis certificates.

Commercially it is used as synonymous with its most primary aluminium used: 99.7 aluminium ingots (bars or ingots). Some people mistakenly refer to this type of aluminium calling it "pure aluminium" or "aluminium 99.99", mistaking it for another type of product with very different characteristics.

To buy ingots of primary aluminium (or other formats), the price is expressed in dollars / ton, calculated the price LME at a premium, which is also variable in time and expressed in dollars / ton.

The use of primary aluminium in the world in 2006 was 34.5 million tons. Other interesting statistics on the use and production of primary aluminium are available at the European Aluminium Association .
